How to fix outer layer of front door?

The outer layer of our unit's front door has been damaged over the years

1. Around the keyhole

2. A strip lower on the door

3. The edge - away from the the handle

It seems that I should be able to fill, sand, stain, refinish these spots, but I have little to no knowledge or experience in this area.

Tips? Please.

To fix the damaged outer layer of your front door, start by sanding the affected areas around the keyhole, the lower strip, and the edge of the door. Then, use a clean cloth to wipe away any dirt, dust, or debris. This ensures that the wood filler will adhere properly to the surface. Once the area is clean, assess the damage. For smaller cracks or gouges, you can apply a stainable wood filler. Using a putty knife, press the filler into the damaged spots, making sure it's slightly overfilled to allow for sanding later.

After the wood filler has dried, use medium-grit sandpaper to smooth out the filled areas, followed by fine-grit sandpaper to create a smooth, even surface. Be careful not to sand too much, as you don’t want to damage the surrounding wood. If you're planning to stain the door, choose a stain that matches the existing finish and apply it to the repaired spots using a small brush or rag, blending it as seamlessly as possible with the rest of the door. Once the stain is dry, finish with a clear coat or polyurethane to protect the repairs and ensure durability.

For the door edge or larger sections that have been worn away, follow the same process: clean, fill, sand, and refinish. Be sure to use painter's tape to protect any hardware or areas you don’t want to accidentally paint or stain.

To get a more consistent finish, you might like to sand the whole front of the door and then stain it all in one coat. That will help your repaired section blend in better.

The other option you should consider is replacing the door as they are relatively budget-friendly and that might be a more viable option once you consider the cost of repair items and your time.
