How to finish external timber doors?

Hi, hoping for some guidance on how best to prepare and what to do/products to use to spruce up these external/internal timber doors. Externally have some protection from weather as are under a verandah. Haven’t been treated for a long time. Is it best to apply an oil (if so what type) or other type of treatment?
Appreciate any advice to bring them back to looking their best again. Thankyou!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @harmony. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about restoring doors.

The first step is to assess the current finish. If there’s any existing varnish, it would need to be sanded back, as varnish doesn't lend itself to simply recoating without full removal. The varnish at the bottom has weathered away, but it still remains at the top. You'll need to sand the entire door back to raw timber.

Once you've prepped the surface, you can choose between using oil or a fresh varnish. Maintenance is relatively easy with oils, as you can simply apply a maintenance coat when needed without having to sand it all back. 

If you'd prefer more of a glossy finish, a marine-grade varnish would be a stronger choice, especially for external doors that could be exposed to more moisture. 

Either way, make sure to clean and sand the surface well before applying any product, and follow the manufacturer's guidelines for best results.
