How to reduce sliding door width?

Hi, I have a sliding door and currently, when the door is fully open the total width is 800mm. Just wondering that without removing the whole door/frame etc, what's the best way to reduce this width to 600mm?

So basically I need the door opening to be 600mm instead of 800mm.

Need the reduction on both sides. So basically instead of 820mm door I need 620mm opening door.

Need to do this as I'm making a shower on the inside wall and need to increase the width of the wall.

Would it be the cavity side of the door or the side where the washer/dryer is sitting?

To reduce the washer side would be relatively straight-forward, requiring removal of the trim work and a frame created to take up the 200mm. You could then add plasterboard over the area and reinstate the trim. Adding the 200mm to the cavity side would be a bit more involved. Once you've removed the trim, it would be difficult to install new wall sheeting over the area as there is nothing to fix on to. If the additional 200mm is required on the cavity side, I'd recommend you seek the assistance of a carpenter.

Yes need the width reduced from the washer side.

My concern is that if I reduce the width then in the future how will I remove or replace the door if need be? The door is 820mm so it won't be possible to slide the door out of the width is reduced fo 620mm. Also the adjusting screw/nut on top of the door will be hidden and I won't be able to adjust the door in the future.

Any possible way to overcome this issue?

Your best bet would be to replace the door with a 620mm (which will likely be a bit small) or a 720mm door.

Once all the trim and frames are put back, the opening left will be 590mm. In future is it possible to remove (if ever need be) a 620mm door from a 590mm opening?

Hi @pash81,

Typically, door openings are constructed to suit the available width of doors. If you custom-make an opening to suit your needs, such as 590mm, you'll run into issues such as a 620mm door not being able to be removed or inserted into it. It depends on how tight the cavity is, but I suspect you'll have issues removing it. For a custom cavity size, you might need to test the doors yourself or trim a small amount off them to get them fixed correctly and still removable in the future. Alternatively, you could take a 520mm door and add a section onto it.

I have got the door frame shortened by 200mm as seen in the picture. Now do I have to cut the metal track to fit in the white door jamb or can I just put the jamb under the metal track?

Hi @pash81,

Cutting the track to allow the door jamb to run at full height will definitely look cleaner.

I'd suggest this is a better option than having it sit under the track.
