How to repair loose plaster?

In this video they are using glue and clamps for reattach loose plaster to the wall….but the clamps and glue used don’t seem to be available here is Australia.

I wanted to know if this could be done in a similar way if the wall behind in brick rather than wood like in the video.

I don’t want to pull off all the loose plaster as this would create a massive job!!

Hi @ChrisA,

Thank you for your question about repairing plaster that is no longer sticking to the brick substrate.

Was it a plaster compound such as Gyprock Hardwall Plaster applied directly over the brick, or has plasterboard been used?

If it was plasterboard, it may be possible to use narrow masonry plugs such as these Ramset 5 x 25mm White Wall Plugs to screw the plasterboard back to the brick wall.

Unfortunately, if it is hard wall plaster like in your video I am not aware of a similar plaster repair system and think it is likely you'll have to scrape it back and replace it.

Do you have any photos you can share? This might help our members come up with a solution to your problem that would avoid this.

Well you just gave me a solution to my plaster walls that have been hit so many times bu a former housemate the glue has fractured and now the plaster reverbs 😲 So thank you! I will be trying something along these lines to repair it.

My suggestion would follow along @JacobZ's with the white wall plugs, making sure the hole is deep enough to fully insert the wall plug so its below the plaster level. I think that would work. I havnt seen those big plastic disks as in the video but can imagine using a few washers to step up with the size doing the same job.

If that dosnt seem like a doable solution then I would go the route of this.

Using 70*35 timber lengths 2.4m, lean them at an angle against the wall that has come away. Then use something heavy such as sandbags or 2L bottles of milk with a rope between two of them to hang over the top of the timber. (use some screws so it will stay up) That way you will create teh same pressure as those plastic disks and screws. Well les sbut still more and a constant more pressure which is what you want.

Anchoring teh base of the timber, well you could use rubbery mats under the foot with more sandbags or potplants to do the job, something with more weight so it wont slide.

The wall in brick with cement render..

Please see the attached picture…you can see the plaster is loose and I want to glue it back on and then fix the cracks rather than try and replace the whole section which is beyond my skill!

The guy in the video is using building adhesive gorilla glue…but can’t see it in Australia

Hi @ChrisA,

Gorilla Glue is one of our suppliers, and they do have a Construction Adhesive on their Australian website which you can likely order through your local store's Special Orders desk. Unfortunately, I'm unsure if it is exactly the same as the one used in your video.

The method shown in the video does seem like it will work, but it is not exactly a conventional method of repairing something like this. If you'd like to give it a go, it will not cause irreparable damage, but I'm not sure how long it will last.

Hi @ChrisA

In your last post you describe your wall is being render over brick, which is not the same as the video, which was plasterboard over brick. If this is correct, I would be recommending that entire section be cut out which you could do then have a professional renderer patch it, which you could then repaint yourself.

The patched render wouldn't be at full depth. There is an underlying issue thats caused these deep cracks most likely within the brickwork. Fixing a blue-board sheet to the newly open section with a flexible adhesive, which the new render would then be applied.

Thanks for the reply…our house is on clay soil and moment can occur from time to time.

Ive fixed a few cracks like this with cornice cement but wanted to try other methods…so thanks for the information.
