How to paint rendered brick interior walls?

Hi team,

I have brick-rendered internal walls which I will apply BondCrete to before I apply Dunlop rapidset repair mortar on it covering cracks and small holes.

I will be painting the walls and I'm wondering what would be the best undercoat to use for brick render internal walls. Are there specific types of undercoat that need to be used for this?

Hi @nika,

Thank you for your question about painting rendered internal walls.

Yes, some primers are much better for rendered surfaces.

Ensure you let your repair mortar cure for at least a week and preferably two before moving on.

After the week, brush the wall down with a soft-bristled brush or broom such as this All Set 270mm Indoor Broom. This will remove any dirt or loose powdery residue that can affect adhesion.

I'd then suggest applying a coat of Dulux PRECISION Sealer Binder. It's an oil-based prep coat that seals porous surfaces and binds unpainted powdery surfaces like mortar or render.

I'd then recommend any of the Dulux Wash and Wear range as your paint over the top.

Thanks for the reply.

I will be using Taubmans easy coat as the top coat which is water based. Can I still apply the Dulux PRECISION Sealer Binder as the undercoat being oil base?

Hi @nika,

You shouldn't have any issues.

Water-based paints adhere well to oil-based primers as long as the primer is fully cured before application.

Dulux PRECISION Sealer Binder should be left for a minimum of 16 hours to cure before painting over the top.

Hi Jacob,

You recommended to use Dulux PRECISION Sealer Binder which is an oil-based undercoat. I don't think this is suitable to be used on top of bondCrete binder and sealer as on the manufacturer's website it says "Do no attempt to apply oil-based paints over Bondall BondCrete" ?

Hi @nika,

As BondCrete is used as a bonding agent between cement products, there is no need for it to be used in any areas where you aren't applying repair mortar.

If you are using the BondCrete as a binder between the wall and the repair mortar, then the repair mortar should cover the BondCrete meaning the Dulux Precision Sealer Binder should never come in contact with the Bondcrete.

I would still suggest these products, but there shouldn't be any reason for the paint to touch the BondCrete.
