How to fix burn mark on timber benchtop?

I have placed a hot pot on this surface and left a ring burn. Then I have seen what a kitchen scourer could do to reduce the mark. In the process I have ground off the gloss surface. I didn't realise what I was doing at the time because the scourer was wet.

So I think now I've made this much of a mess I could keep going and try a light sand to see if I can reduce the burn mark, then apply the ikea oil to restore the sheen and waterproofing.

Or perhaps a tradie of some kind (?) could do a professional fix?

It was a good try, but I'm afraid the burn mark is too deep it will need to be sanded down to remove the damage. I propose engaging the services a professional trades person to sand the table back to timber and reapply a new sealer over the timber benchtop. Please note that it will not be the same finish as the original benchtop, but it will be a fresh new uniform finish. I suggest using Cabot's Benchtop Clear as a new sealer for your benchtop.

However, if you wish to stain the benchtop to a darker finish there is also the Monocel and Timber Protect products.

Thanks. If we decide thats too expensive and want to just give it a light sand by hand and resurface/seal that area, Whats the best sandpaper to use?

Hi @daven25,

You're going to want to start with a fairly aggressive grit to remove the burn. This 80-grit sandpaper wrapped around a sanding block to ensure it stays flat will do the trick.

Once you're happy that the burn is gone, use 120 grit followed by 180 grit to smooth and finish the timber before coating.

When the sanding is done, you'll want to make sure all the sawdust is removed. This can be done with a brush or vacuum, followed by a damp cloth.

Allow the timber to fully dry before coating it with oil.
