How to patch a formerly tiled wall?

Hi everybody,

I've removed some tiles from the wall and scraped the adhesive off.

What should I do to prep this wall before painting?

Most of the adhesive off, but it is not complete smooth.

The holes I will patch with gyprock and topping compound.

I thought it was a concrete wall but once I looked closer it looks like a plaster wall? Whichever way it needs to be sanded smooth and any trace of glue needs to be gone. Once you have filled the holes and sanded back, an undercoat will be fine. If you try sanding the pits with adheasive still on the wall it will probarly clag your sander. Id be using a glue remover to remove it or a painters/plasterers large spatula to scrape it away depending on how gluey it is.

It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Dave-1.

To get your wall paint-ready, you've already tackled the hard part by removing the tiles and most of the adhesive! For a smooth finish, start by sanding the wall with a 240grit sandpaper to even out any remaining bumps. An electric sander will make the job quicker and give a more consistent finish, especially on larger areas. Once you've sanded, cover the floor with painters’ drop sheets to protect it from dust and spills.

For patching holes, use a gyprock compound, as you mentioned, followed by a topping compound to create a seamless surface. After the compound dries, sand it lightly with fine-grit sandpaper for a flawless finish. Before painting, make sure to wipe down the wall with a damp cloth or tack cloth to remove any dust—this will help the paint adhere evenly. It will be necessary to apply a wall primer on your wall, which will help hide imperfections and give your paint a more even look.
