How to build an apron around the perimeter of the house?

How can I effectively remove soil and clay from touching the screening below an exterior wall to reduce humidity issues in the adjacent room? The area previously had a garden bed right up against the timber. I’m looking for the best materials and methods to use, and I have access to plenty of large rocks like those in the photo. Any advice on addressing this problem?

To better understand the problem, could you clarify whether the moisture is being absorbed directly into the timber wall, causing it to transfer moisture into the interior of the building, or if it's more about moisture being sealed in beneath the building, as the wall is restricting airflow and promoting humidity? Identifying the exact cause will help determine the best approach to fix the issue.

In addition to assessing the cause of the humidity, how deep were you planning to excavate in front of the wall? Excavation could be a straightforward method, but it’s important not to disturb or undermine the footings of the wall. Doing so could lead to structural issues, so care must be taken when removing soil. It’s also worth checking the rear side of the wall to see if soil is built up there as well. If there is, it could be contributing to moisture buildup and needs to be addressed.

If the timber wall is indeed wicking moisture, you’ll need to decouple it from the building. One effective way to do this is by installing a moisture barrier between the wall and the building or you could apply a painted membrane to the timber wall to create a waterproof barrier that prevents moisture from being absorbed into the timber frame of your home. Both options can help reduce the humidity issue and protect your home from further damage.
