Why are my leaves getting burnt?

Hi bunnings team,

With your help i got rid of critters from my strawberry then all fruit got burnt after repotting i,m getting mushrooms in my strawberry pots please tell me what can i do to save strawberries.

Can you please have a look orange plant it has lots of blossom and nèw growth and little oranges is it right time as it is almost summer plant is almost 1 1/2 year old and some of leaves aur turning yellow and brown do 8 need to do something or it's right.

Please have a look on my lemon plant it's dwarf myer lemon it got lots of blossom little lemon come and lemon start burning can you please tell me whats

'S wrong with lemon plant.

My capsicum plant was doing well grew one little capsicum and now capsicum size is not getting big and rest of flowers start burning pkease tell me what's happening to my plant.

Please have a look at petunia as well they were six pack why some of plants are getting dead.

I regularly fertilise plant with charlie carp every second week is it right or i need to do something else.

Let me try and answer some of your questions. If the leaves are burning and the fruits are burning, it could be because of too much fertilizer or something that you sprayed on the plant like a very strong insecticide. In regards to your orange tree, it usually takes three years for the plant to produce fruit, but it can happen earlier. For the meantime just keep looking after it with regular feeding and watering. You don't need to do anything special for it.

As for the dwarf lemon and capsicum, I suspect that the same thing is happening especially if you are getting burns on all the plants. If you are using an insect spray on all the plants, I suggest stopping it and see if their condition improves. If you are applying fertilizer, read the back of the container so that you can see when it is supposed to be applied.

Those pots look very dry and are only half full of dirt mix.

It looks like plain dirt and doesn't look like it has much body in it.

You need a good quality citrus mix for pots as well as specialised fertiliser for this time of year.

Citrus trees are gross feeders and need the water kept up to them especially at this time of the year when fruiting. Don't let the pots dry out.

You may try putting some sort of mulch on top of the pots to help retain the moisture.

They also don't like a lot of wind and need plenty of sun. Mind you pots will heat up the root area a lot more than if the plant was in the ground.

Check your pots regularly at this time of year as they may need watering more often.

Yes, I completely agree with Bergs - the pots look very dry. The strawberries look like they are shrivelling up due to lack of moisture in the soil/potting mix. That would also be a cause for the lemon and orange fruits to stop developing. Keep the roots moist and as cool as possible.

Good morning @BismaAbbid Thank you for sharing a few photos as it makes it easier to identify problems. I agree with Eric and Bergs. This is what I can see……

- Chilli plants look like they have been burnt with a spray at some point, maybe sprayed in the heat of the day ?

- Strawberries look burnt by spray as well and have dried up. Just cut and remove the dried fruit.
- Looks like a small lemon tree with shrivelled fruit, remove them.

- Mushrooms popping up in soil is fine, don’t stress about it.Just don’t eat them.

All your plants are in black plastic pots which is fine, BUT you have to be aware that they will dry out very quickly and dry soil will definitely affect the plant growth.
Also the black plastic heating up in the sun can burn the root system, so make sure you water them daily throughout the hotter months.

The soil in the pots looks quite low, I would suggest topping up the pots with a premium potting mix that has a Wetting Agent and Slow Release fertiliser in it, this will definitely help. I’m in Perth so I like to use a potting mix like Baileys Premium or Osmocote Premium.

You mentioned you use Charlie Carp fortnightly ? That’s completely fine as I do too , love it !!! Just don’t go over the recommended amount.

Thanks Eric you're being so helpful, yes you are right i did pepper spray because rat was keep coming and eating strawberry i googled and get to know about it but i'll never use it again as this thing happened.I am using charlie carp 10ml in 2l may be few ml up and down and i put estimated a cup of it each pot is it right.

Thanks berg for your advice i potted tgem with citus mix ,i'll top up plant with soil and mulch. I am watering them daily please let me know should i water them twice as tgey look dried AND TELL ABOUT MULCH WHICH ONE IS BETTER.

Thanks mich you all are so professional .I appteciate all of you plants are are in better condition topp up with premium potting mix strawberry is healing grew two lovely red strawberries this week.Lemon isin still same condition.

Just to quickly answer your questions, around 10ml of Charlie Carp in 2L of water is perfect and a cup of this mixture per pot every 2-3 weeks is great.

There is no specific watering timeframe for all plants as their conditions can be very different to one another. The rule of thumb is to water deeply when the soil is dry then check the soil before watering again. If you go to water your plant and see that the soil is still damp, wait another day and check the soil again before watering. Too much water can be just as detrimental to the plant's health as too little water, so checking it regularly is the key to good plant health.

Any mulch is fine, and I wouldn't say one is better than others. Its main purpose in this situation is to reduce the amount of water that is evaporating so as long as your mulch covers the existing soil, it will do this.

In future a good quality ceramic or terracotta pot in a light colour is great. The thicker walls will absorb and reduce the heat far better than a plastic pot will. Painting the pots is likely not worthwhile as you'll need to replace them in the future as your plants grow.

Keep up the watering and fertilising and you should have some good results. The main thing is ensuring you are consistent.

My strawberry plant is suffering since spring started i donot know who is after it today i pick twi tbey were squishy bitten and when i press one outside i found a mite or worm it was about 1mm please tell me how can i save my plant we didnot taste a single strawberry in all this season someone else is eating it.

I found some orange bugs simmilar to lady bug is it the culprit.

Plant is full of blossom.

Hi @BismaAbbid,

It looks like your strawberry plant is struggling due to both the lack of space and potential insect pests. First, I recommend repotting the plant into a larger pot with a quality potting mix. Adding some compost will improve the soil's fertility and help your plant grow stronger. Regular fertilising will also give it a boost, helping it become more robust and able to fend off pests.

Insects attacking strawberries is pretty common, even on healthy plants. However, when the plant is healthy and has a good number of strawberries, losing one or two won't be as noticeable. The orange bugs you mentioned could be the variety of ladybugs, which are beneficial insects and not what is eating the strawberries.

Good luck with your plant, and hopefully, you'll be able to taste those strawberries soon.

Thanks Mitchell i"ll repot it in bigger pot.can you please suggest which compost is good for strawberry i used charlie carp every second week. I potted it with citrus mix and then top up with premium potting mix.you can advice as well if they are not good as i am not successful strawberry grower.

This compost will be suitable. The citrus mix and premium potting mix should be fine. Charlie Carp is a great liquid fertiliser, but you might like to add some Dynamic Lifter, too.
