Hi all, I’m putting in an outdoor sink and shower and I want to put it on a concrete slab, it’s 2 mtrs x 1 mtrs. How thick does it need to be and does it need to be steel reinforced. thanks
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @cosimo. It's marvellous to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about creating a concrete slab.
I apologise for the delay in my reply.
For an outdoor shower concrete slab measuring 2 meters by 1 meter, a thickness of 75mm to 100mm is generally sufficient. Steel reinforcement is highly recommended to ensure the slab's durability and prevent cracking, especially as it will be exposed to water and foot traffic.
To construct the slab, begin by excavating the area to a depth of about 150mm, depending on the thickness of the slab and the base layer. Next, add a 50mm layer of compacted crushed stone to provide stability and compact it. After this, lay steel mesh over the gravel base, slightly elevated, using bar chairs to prevent direct contact with the ground. Create formwork and then pour the concrete mix into it, spreading it evenly and smoothing the surface with a trowel. Give the slab a slight slope toward the drainage point to allow water to flow correctly.
To ensure proper set-up, let the slab cure for at least 48 hours before using it.
