How to add stone cladding around base of timber posts?

Hi community, I have 4 pillars at the front of my house. The trim around the bases are constantly cracking and no doubt rotting despite my best efforts to caulk them every now and then. I was thinking an alternative solution would be some stacked stone cladding around them up to about 1m high. How would I go about doing this? Do I need to box it out with some timber and fibre cement sheeting then stone on top of that? Pics attached of the posts and what I'm proposing. Thank you!

Your proposed solution of using stacked stone cladding is a practical and visually appealing option. However, before proceeding, it’s important to inspect the timber posts thoroughly to ensure they are structurally sound and free from rot or decay under the existing trim. If any damage is found, it should be repaired or replaced to prevent further issues.

Assuming the posts are in good condition, you can box them out with treated timber to create a square or rectangular shape. Once boxed out, cover the framework with fibre cement sheeting, as it provides a solid and moisture-resistant base for the cladding. Ensure all joints are properly sealed to prevent water ingress, which could lead to future rot.

Next, you can apply the stacked stone cladding using an appropriate tile adhesive designed for outdoor use. Start at the base and work your way up, ensuring the stones are level as you go. For a polished finish, consider capping the top edge of the cladding with a complementary material. This not only enhances the appearance but also protects the edge from weather exposure. 

Lastly, seal the stone with a quality penetrating sealer to maintain its look and durability over time.
