How to install curtain rod brackets into stud and hollow wall?

Hello community. This is my fist D.I.Y project. I’m trying to install Ikea double curtain rod brackets, one into a timber stud and another on to hollow wall. The bracket did not come with nails. I’m assuming it’ll weigh around 7Kg when both rods and curtains are hanged.

I’m not sure whether a 10Gx30mm is enough or should I go for 40mm or is 40mm an overkill etc.. What would be the correct nail size I should get? Is there a guideline when choosing the correct nail size? Also what’s the recommended hollow wall anchor? Would Ramset 16mm Hollow wall anchor works? I really appreciate your support. Thank you.

You have done your home work you are perfectly on the right track.

The hollow wall anchor you choose will work well and hold the weight if two anchors used as back up.

The 30 mm screw will do the job into a stud if you dont own a cordless drill driver. but if you use a cordless drill driver. 40mm screw it will hold a 100kg of weight.

Ideally you should now own a Cordless drill/driver to start you DIY adventures I might suggest a ozito cordless drill driver as they ok and inexpensive. Also get a pack of cordless multi screw driver tool tips to start your adventures of on the right foot.

If you are installing the curtain over a window, there will always be a stud on each side of the window, so, if possible, utilise the studs instead of wall anchors. You can use a stud finder to locate studs if you are unsure. Check out How to use a stud finder for some guidance.

As @Jewelleryrescue has said, the Ramset 16mm Hollow Wall Anchors are a great option where the stud isn't available, but sometimes they are a little tricky to engage. Ramset have designed this Hollow Wall Anchor Setting Tool to make them much easier to use. Alternatively, you can use a Ramset Nylon WallMate Plasterboard Anchor.

For this project, you will have to use a screw instead of a nail. My suggestion is to use these 40mm Plasterboard Screws. They will be perfect going into a timber stud, as well as into a WallMate Plasterboard Anchor. If the slot in the curtain rod bracket is a little bit too wide for the screw head, you can use a washer to spread the load and hold it in place.
