How to restore a garden pond?

Any recommendations on who could assist.
The pump has stopped working and I’m reluctant to spend time and money incase it needs more than just a pump.

ideally, I would like someone to make it look more functional but also aesthetically pleasing. It’s 2.5 mtrs deep

Thanks for sharing your question about restoring your pond. Your pond pump is the heart of your pond, it aerates the water to provide oxygen and sucks up the waste at the bottom to keep the pond clean. without your pump your pond will turn dirty and toxic in a short amount of time. If money is to be spent, I recommend getting a new pump for the pond.

Generally speaking, ponds are often not that deep, but you mentioned yours is 2.5meters deep so putting decorative pebbles is out of the question. The best thing you can do for your pond is to improve its filtration system so that it clears up the water. With a clear view to the bottom, it will make looking into the pond very interesting.

Google "Pond Maintenance" and it will come up with services in your area to look at the pump and get the water clear again. It will one important to get this serviced asap looking at the size of the fish. As @EricL mentioned, having clear water will also make it aesthetically pleasing.

Re-staining and painting the bridge and installing a screen in front/surrounding the filtration equipment will also make a big difference and cut down noise.

Just a side note, that this size pond would be essentially called the same as a swimming pool with regards to pool fencing laws. So if you don't already comply, but might be worth investigating.

Now thats a decent sized pond and a fair amount of water that is circulating just by the size of the pipes.

As @Nailbag has mentioned with the size and depth it does nneed a fence around it. Think the max depth in NSW is 25cm or 30cm? before a fence is essential.

I have a pool and yeah I have had issues in the past with my pump.

You can replace the pump and then be happy there is a warranty and know that everyting is running ok.

You can actually get the pump repaired. I have done that twice over the years where the seal leaks water, the pumps bearings rust/clag and then there is that terrible grinding noise 🙂 It was about half the price of a new pump with a shorter warranty was all.

Short term you can still run airiation to the pond to make sure their is oxygen in the water, tho that is a sliding scale as you need to make sure the buildup of waste is removed.

Their are pond service people around and it may be an idea to get one out to see what is needed as a start. Then decide if you want to continue with the pond as is.

Could we have a further back picture of the area if possible so we can come up with some ideas to make the area more appealing? @Nailbag has already suggsted some nice ideas and I will throw in the idea of some rock work against the edge of the pond to break up those straight lines.

I really think ponds add to an area and bring a relaxing feeling (even with having to maintain them 🙂 ) Maybe you could consider going down the path of a annual pond maintence company, much like a pool service company that maintains your pool?
