Expand the treads of the stairs all the way to the wall to make it a more grand opening and inviting to the stairs above.

One quick way to give your stairs a fresh new look is to give it a new colour scheme. I propose grey for the handrail, keep the bannisters white and perhaps a darker grey for the steps. There are so many ways to colour your steps, I suggest visiting your local store and getting a brochure and looking at the proposed colour combinations.
