What sealant to seal / coat ceramic tile biscuit / rims?

Hi,

- What product do you recommend to seal ceramic tile biscuit / rims?

- How / where do you apply the product? Just the grout, or all of biscuit?

Please see the photo of the section of the edge of the tile, showing the biscuit. Don't ask, loooong story.

There is no option to re-do the tiles, and looking for a way to make the biscuit / grout waterproof.

Spoke to a few people, and easiest way to do this (even temporarily) without re-doing all the tiles, is to seal the edge / rim / brown biscuit (some said the biscuit can absorb water, some say a tile should not be penetrated by water from all angles so a bit confused).

Sikaflex? But which sikaflex?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tiles.

There are three possible ways to finish the edge of your exposed tile. First is to cover it with an aluminium angle such as the Metal Mate 12 x 12x1.4mm 1m White Aluminium Equal Angle. I recommend using a wet area silicone to anchor it to the tile. Next is to use a touch up paint such as Rust-Oleum 13.3ml White Tub And Tile Touch Up Kit a good craft brush and a steady hand will be necessary for this technique to work. The last one is to use ordinary white silicone in combination with painters masking tape. It will be a bit tricky to get level even finish.

🙂 Welcome to the community, hopefully there is something amongst these pages that can help you out 🙂

My first idea was pretty much @EricL 's suggestion 🙂

Second idea is actually a piece of flat bar instead of the angle, something about as wide as the biscuit and the same fixing @EricL has described. It would give it a nice clean edge (and so will the right angle) but the difference will be there will be no catch on the edge. Down side is you may need to do some maintence every so often to make sure its solidly attached.

Firstly the "biscuits" are actually called tiles. That brown edge of the tile is nothing to be concerned about waterproofing wise in that location. So, its purely a cosmetic fix you then might be after, especially to soften that potentially sharp top edge.

A very simple solution would be to run a fine metal file along the top edge to round it off smooth to feel. Then use this touch up enamel on the exposed brown edge.

A far more involved solution is along the lines of @EricL. It required you to dig out the grout under the brown edge top tile deep enough to insert an edge trim similar to this one secured in to place with this product.
