How to add barn door for privacy in second living area?

Above is first priority to be done.

Hi DIY lovers, Happy new year 2025. I hope you guys had a great break and looking forward to many projects.

As a first project in my house, I wanted to install barn door for privacy for my study/work, plus will work very well when relatives come for sleepover for a night or so.

I see plenty of project done on Barn Door, but thought of starting fresh for my requirements, hope you guys are okay with this.

I am looking for recommendation on what sizes of barn doors are suitable for me in my two different situations, methodology for installation. THank you.

Second Priority

This one has no support (indicated in Green highlights) around the Ceiling Area like the first picture. So I am guessing this will need a little bit of extra work, and this is second priority.

Happy New Year @Sugar!

All our barn doors are available for you to select from on the Bunnings website. You simply need to choose one that you like the style of and that the size is slightly larger than your opening. For example, the Hume 2150 x 1000 x 35mm Internal Barn Door Frontier FBDS1 would be suitable for your second smaller opening. You will need to construct a bulkhead to fill the space above the door.

However, your first door is really quite large at 1200mm wide and would require at least a 1300mm wide door. Something of this size would need to be custom-made for you, and I'd recommend you head into your local store and discuss with our Special Order team what options are available through our suppliers. Hume doors have a great selection of oversized barn doors.

1. ) would it be possible to install 2 barn doors, one opens to left and another to right. One side of the wall (behind the desk) has spsace of 2100mm, another side of the wall has space of 700mm (but has power switch on the wall) as you can see on the image ?

2.) How hard will it be to construct one big barn door myself at home? Will it require a lot of strategies and tools? Thanks.

It is possible to install two barn doors, one opening to the left and the other to the right. With 2100mm on one side, you'd have ample space for a standard barn door, but with the 700mm space on the other side, the size of the door could be more limiting, especially with the power switch. You’d want to ensure the door can open fully without obstructing the switch. If it is a tight fit, you might need to consider modifying the space or adjusting the door design to accommodate the switch. You could use a split track system so that the two doors slide independently.

Constructing one large barn door yourself can definitely be done, though it will require some careful planning, accurate measuring, and the right tools. You will need tools like a circular saw, drill and sander. If you're comfortable with intermediate D.I.Y. projects, it's very achievable. However, it might take a bit of time and patience to get the fit and finish just right, especially for a door of significant size.
