How to build a single outdoor step?

We are wanting to build a single step that attaches to the current gazebo and spans its whole length. It will come out to the current bricks.

1) how would we do this?
2) we need to set that final line of bricks and make it level as they have been moved. Would we use sand gap?

Could you provide a bit more information on the issue you're facing? Are you looking to create a step because the height difference between the bricks and the deck is too much, or do you simply want to cover this area with a step? If the height difference is significant, one option could be to reduce the height of the current step by building a platform that spans out to the bricks, and then add a second drop down to the bricks. However, this might create a trip hazard as it's not a standard step-up. Alternatively, if the deck height is too high, you could continue the bricks right up to the edge of the deck and then install a single step at that point.

For setting the final line of bricks, using sand as a gap filler can work, but it's important to make sure the bricks are level and well-supported. You might want to consider bedding the bricks in place using a mortar mix for a more stable finish.

The height difference is too high and needs a step in the middle but we would also like to cover up the gap. We felt this would be easier than trying to get matching bricks and continuing right up to the deck?

The issue is that although the height is too high, you don't have enough height for a regulation height step @Alysha16; it will be more of a ledge, which would be considered a trip hazard.

The simplest way to achieve what you've described would be to create a frame with joists over the area and, essentially, create a mini deck/platform.

Ok change of plans. We are going to go one single step across the deck. It should be compliant as it’s a 15cm drop then a step that’s 15cm deep to the floor. It won’t come out as far as the current bricks. Just the depth of a normal step.

Are there some instructions we can follow for this?

Hi @Alysha16,

The simplest way I can see to create this step is to build a simple ladder frame from H3 pine, attach it to the current deck using batten screws and support the outside edge with pedestal feet.

You can then clad the frame with decking timber to match your existing deck.
