How to tighten loose wire railing cable?

Hi all,

Good morning and happy new year to all.

I have wire cable railing in my balcony.

I tried to tighten the loose ones but there are some that twist back and stay loose. I thought that the fitting itself is faulty.

I just want to get your inputs if I need to replace the fitting or maybe including the wires.

It sounds like you’re on the right track. To determine whether the issue lies with the fittings or the wire itself, you can perform a simple test. Try tightening all the cables using the same method. If some stay secure and others twist back and loosen, it’s likely that the fittings on the problematic cables are faulty and may need replacement.

However, if all the cables seem to loosen or twist, it could be an issue with the wire itself, such as excessive stretch or wear. The cables themselves might need to be shortened due to stretching, and the fitting might have run out of room to tension them adequately.

Hi @MitchellMc,

I just tried to re-tighten the railing and like the prior, I only managed to fix the top half of the wire. Its really seems that the rest are stretched out and there are no rooms to tighten the wired via fittings. I dont think I will be able to cut and redo the wires that securely fixed at the end of the fittings as it looks like it needed a special tool to do that.

I can't see if the post on the right side of the balustrade is fixed into the wall like the left one is. The fact they are all loose from about halfway down makes me think one of the posts may have slowly been pulled out of plumb. Since the one on the left is attached to the wall, I suspect the right one may could be out of plumb.

This could be completely wrong, but it worth checking before moving on. Try loosening them all and tightening them working from the bottom up. If the top of the post is tightened first and the post on the right is not connected to the wall, it could pull the posts over slightly meaning the space at the bottom is wider than the space at the top.

Give this a try and see how you go. If this doesn't help, I'm happy to offer guidance on shortening and reinstalling the wires as this is your only real option.
