Need outdoor privacy screen for small front porch

Would like foldable so protect windows in day and then movable to screen off area when I’m on porch. Would like to be able to anchor to this pot plant stand so neighbour can’t damage it and would also need to be water proof to withstand deliberate soaking. any suggestions on how to anchor wheels and what to use be great. I’ve got a power drill but that’s it. Novice level -first DIY. Thx

Welcome to the community 🙂 I am sure you will find very similar projects in these pages to what you are after.

In fact here is one that @casilda was wondering about.

How to build a lockable wheel base for screen? I suggested what general parts you could use to consruct it.

I wouldnt use your plant stand as is for supporting a taller screen, I would be worried your plants take an impropmtu flying lesson in even a small breeze.

I also have built a outside lounge that could be shortened to do the same job as what you want.

This was not a hard project 🙂 A cicular saw and a drill were the main tools .

I spin the lounge around all the time, it has a high back for a windbreak and stops the sun from sizzling me.

How wide is your patio? How much space do you have to turn something like either of the above? And last question 🙂 Does the patio get wet?

Thanks so much. I don’t have capacity to access circular saw. But appreciate tip about not fixing to pot. I was hoping someone might know how to brace wheels as the feet on the screen are very small squares/rectangles. In store they weren’t sure. The wheels on that referred post are square based but are way too big. Appreciate quick response though thanks. If anyone has any other ideas or similar DIY that be great

Mmmm If you want to attach wheels to the privacy screen you showed, how about these Move It 50mm 40kg Grey Swivel Right Angle Bracket Castor - 2 Pack The have a tall long side to attach to the screens posts.

I'm sorry to hear you are dealing with a tough situation with your neighbour and I'm happy to assist as much as I can.

Unfortunately, I'm not confident the room divider you have linked to would be stable outdoors, especially if it was put on wheels. Attaching it to the plant stand would add some stability, but there's a good chance a strong breeze would still be able to blow it over.

If there are any structures available, such as a column or timber post, attaching to them might work better.

Things like tie-down straps, reusable cable ties and carabiners could theoretically be used to keep the screen in place, but we would need to see the space to recommend a good method.

If you can upload some photos of the space you are looking to screen off, we may be able to assist with a better solution to your problem.

Let me know if you need a hand uploading images, I'm happy to help if required.

Thanks for your thoughtful response. There are unfortunately no supports like posts or even a ballistrade. It’s the good old 1960s front step off the foot path into the door. It’s this kind of scenario - without the trees. Think concrete city. So expensive plants would be a silly investment as they will cook. Thought I could at least fold the bifold back when it’s windy and at night

Mmmmm Trying to come up with something that is heavy enough to stop wind from tilting it and movable. I keep coming back to the option of a prebuilt cabinet (from the kitchen range) with a privacy screen attached to the back on the larger wheels with two lockable wheels. If you limit the base to only 400mm wide then you still have enough room to be able to walk past and open your door.

As it will really be "living" out in the weather I would suggest to keep an eye out for a solid timber box over the partical board style from the kitchen range.

My brain is still trying to think of a workaround. So here is one 🙂

Picture this -

A normal plastic garbage bin Willow 60L Black Dome Bin - Base Only

Two treated posts pine H3 that sit inside the bin on either side of the bin wall. 90 x 45mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine - 2.4m

Fill the garbage bin with rocks (or soil but rocks would be easier) pre drill a bunch of drainage holes in the base of the bin. Making sure the two timber pieces are opposite each other.

Then using this expandable plastic (fake shrubbery) curve it around the bin and fasten it to each post. 2 x 1m Light Ivy Cloth Bamboo Expand Artificial Hedge

You could use screws, wire, cable ties to fasten it to the posts, the half circular look or the straight between the post look is possible.

No wheels needed as you could tilt and roll it. (or you can get Jack 4 Wheel Heavy Duty Extendable Pot Mover )
