How to remove weeds from Kikuyu lawn?

Hi Members,

I got Kikuyu lawn set up in my new house, as I'm absent from the site during Christmas, lawn hasn't grown as expected, and we have a weed overrunning problem. I have to remove the weeds before I'd apply other growth solutions to rescue the lawn. While most weeds can be controlled by hand pulling, Pigweed is proven very difficult to remove manually, as it grows quickly and more tolerant to the summer heat.

I haven't found any herbicides / chemical solution able to kill the Pigweeds while preserving the Kikuyu lawn. Any recommendations would be highly appreciated.

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

The most natural, eco-friendly method of weed control is manual removal, so if you can avoid using herbicides you should. A long weeding tool like this Cyclone Extract Weeder can make manual removal much easier on your body and should be considered if viable.

Unfortunately, there are no herbicides that I'm aware of that will kill pigweed and not harm your lawn. There are certainly herbicides that will kill pigweed, but they will harm your lawn.

You should have some success using a non-selective glyphosate-based herbicide such as Yates Zero. You can use a Yates Zero Applicator Brush to ensure it is only applied to the weeds.
