How to repaint window trims?

I have about 15 window trims that I want to repaint in a lighter color. The trims are of three different types: oil-finished, untreated, and weathered. I’m looking for advice on the materials I’ll need for the project, as well as recommendations for a good corded sander.

Preparation is key to achieving a durable and smooth finish. Start by cleaning the trims thoroughly using Sugar Soap to remove any dirt, grease, or residue. Next, sand each surface according to its type: lightly sand oil-finished trims to remove any sheen, smooth untreated trims with medium-grit sandpaper, and sand weathered trims thoroughly to eliminate deteriorated timber. If there are any cracks or holes in the weathered trims, fill them with wood filler and sand them smooth once dried.

Once the surfaces are prepped, apply a high-quality oil-based undercoat, such as Dulux 1-Step Oil-Based Primer, Sealer & Undercoat, which works well for all three trim types. After the undercoat has dried, proceed with 2-3 coats of a durable topcoat in your desired lighter colour, allowing adequate drying time between coats. For sanding, a Ryobi 100W Palm Sander With Bag is recommended as it’s reliable, affordable, and well-suited for intricate or smaller surfaces. 

Following these steps will ensure your window trims look fresh and professionally finished.
