How to improve bathroom with Besser block walls?

Hi all!

I have this bathroom/toilet downstairs and it feels like a jail. The besser blocks are so ugly! I don't like the look of the splashback behind the sink either. I'd want to make the whole space look more modern! Even if that requires replacing the sink/shower. I really like the look of the wooden slats along the walls that people do but I hope to get some ideas on how to modernise this area! Please and thank you!

I wouldn't mind making it feel like more of a bathroom either, if possible, since it is such a small area..

The besser block wall in your bathroom is in great condition, making it an excellent starting point for modernising the space. One option is to tile all the walls, which can give the area a sleek and polished look. Large-format tiles or modern patterns can make the room feel more spacious and contemporary.

Alternatively, you could opt for wet area sheeting, such as the Easycraft 9 x 2400 x 1200mm EasyVJ100 Primed Wet Area Interior Wall Lining. Totally agree with Michael on the VJ panelling. Cost effective and will give you a modern look. I’d probably paint it in a woodsmoke grey as it will complement the shower tile and will brighten the room up as it’s quite light.

Above the toilet I would add wooden shelves to give it a focal point and take the eye away from looking down at the toilet.

Splashback wise, I would choose a basic white gloss tile (timeless) and go the full length evenly across behind the washing machine.
I’d also add an overhead cupboard or two above the sink and washing machine to hide products. I’d also make it centred.
