Do different paint brands use different formulas?

Do different brand paints use different formulas for the same colour? We bought 2 sample pots of Taubmans colours, wanted slightly lighter so went back and got two more, still colours from Taubmans range, however didn’t realise until now that they gave us British paints sample pots this time. Anyway, we chose the colour, went back to buy the paint (chose Taubmans ceiling paint because it’s going on the ceiling) started painting, and it’s a very different colour to the sample. Comparing the labels they don’t seem to be the same tints used (although I’m not 100% sure I’m reading it correctly either 😅) I know different brands can give different results, different bases etc, but the results are really different

Yes, different brand paints use different formulas for the same colour as the composition of the base is different between brands.

The sample pots use low-sheen interior paint as a base, and using a different base, especially if it is a different brand can affect the colour and finish. 

The finish is the main difference here. Ceiling paints are flat, whereas the sample pots are low sheen. This subtle difference means you are unlikely to get the same colour using ceiling paint. 

My suggestion is to return the paint with your receipt and have the Paint Team mix your colour using a British Paints low-sheen base. It is not typically what you would use for a ceiling, but the colour will be closer to what you are after.
