How to restore a timber table?

Hi everyone,

I recently came across this wooden table (photo attached) and noticed it's looking a bit dull and worn out. I’d like to bring back its shine and make it look fresh again.

Since I’m a complete beginner when it comes to furniture restoration, I’m looking for basic yet effective instructions or suggestions.

Here are some questions I have:

1. What products would you recommend for cleaning and polishing the surface?

2. Should I sand it lightly before applying anything? If yes, what kind of sandpaper should I use?

3. Are there any simple methods or tools I can use for this project?

I’d prefer a low-cost approach if possible and would appreciate any step-by-step guidance to make this table look great again!

It looks like you’ve found a stunning live-edge tabletop, and with a little work, it should look amazing again! 

To start, you’ll need to sand the surface to remove the deteriorated finish and address any scratches. Begin with 180-grit sandpaper to gently sand away the old coating and smooth out any shallow imperfections. Use a detail sander or random orbital sander for efficiency and to save effort compared to hand sanding. Once the surface feels smooth, switch to 240-grit sandpaper to achieve a finer finish, making sure to sand in the direction of the grain for the best results. After sanding, wipe the table with a damp cloth to remove any dust or debris.

Once the surface is prepared, you can apply a durable protective coating like Cabot's Cabothane Clear. This polyurethane coating will provide excellent protection and enhance the natural beauty of the wood. Before applying, ensure the table is completely clean and dry. Use a high-quality synthetic brush to apply an even coat of the polyurethane, working in the direction of the grain. Allow the first coat to dry as per the manufacturer’s instructions, then lightly sand with fine 320-grit sandpaper to smooth out any raised grain. Wipe away the dust and apply a second coat for a durable and professional finish. 

With this process, your table should look refreshed, protected, and ready to shine in its new space!
