How to renovate a timber staircase?

I'm a beginner at DIY for a new home, and I'm trying to figure out how to do something like in the photo above. I'm planning to cover the top part with wood and paint the rest, but looking at the current state without the vinyl, I can't seem to come up with any ideas.

please anyone’s help me.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Gambii. It's brilliant to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about renovating a staircase.

Your staircase is constructed from particle board, which presents some challenges if you're aiming for a finish similar to the one in the photo. To achieve this, you would need to either deconstruct the stairs and replace the particle board treads with solid timber or take an alternative approach. Deconstructing would involve removing the existing treads entirely and installing new timber ones while potentially painting the existing risers if they are in good condition.

Alternatively, you could opt for a simpler method by cladding the stairs. This would involve removing the vinyl and attaching new timber treads and risers over the particle board. However, this approach has a drawback: adding new layers will raise the height of the treads, particularly the top one, which will end up higher than the second-floor level. To resolve this, you could remove the existing top tread and replace it with a new one to maintain consistent height throughout the staircase.

Mmmmm when we uncover thingswhile trying to upgrade them 🙂 I think most of the things around my place have had three steps backwards to get to a starting point.

I would also suggest to clad the existing steps, As you have started removing the back plane and the top of the tread You will be able to see how differant materials will look (plus the sizing of heights of materials) If you replace height for height then definently you could modernise your staircase.

Kitchen Kickboards for the riser of your steps may be a place to start.

Ideal DIY Floors 1.83m Econo Lite Timber Vinyl Sheet Flooring for the tread.

I would use liquid nails to attach both the tread and riser.

timber trim are some examples you could have for the edges.

My apologies for the slow input. Personally I like @MitchellMc 2nd solution to remove the existing particle board treads and replace them with hardwood ones. They won't be cheap, but will be the easiest newbie DIY solution. Plus they will prove to be the most durable and in my opinion will look the best to.

This is not to discount @Dave-1 suggestion to use floating floorboards which come in a huge range of finishes. Though not as durable for treads as solid timber. And they will need a metal bull nose trim along the front edge for durability.

This is why I like this forum. There is always more then one way to do something. Being able to picture and offer different solutions helps me solve the next one that comes up 🙂 So many times I have taken a bit from here, another bit from one of your projects say, and then one from someone elses to come up with my solution. 🙂

Thanks @Dave-1 I couldn't agree more with that methodology. So many of my projects have been inspired by the thoughts of others and projects both within and outside of the community. This is typical for me when it comes to finish design aspects of a room reno to landscaping. Then working out how can I do that myself? In some occasions I've even changed tact on a started project, because I like the new inspired spark much better.
