How to fix timber door jamb to brick passage?

Hi all. Long time reader first time poster, bit stumped in my latest project, I want to fit two doors to an open living room. House is double brick, internal walls single. I planned to use Ramset plugs and long crews however have found out the brick work is laid internal cavities facing the door way so I just drill into nothing. Next option is chemset. pump the cavity full and apply construction adhesive to the flats. Apologies if it's not clear hopefully the photos will help. Second one is in the ceiling above the door way.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about anchoring your door jamb to brick.

It might be necessary for you to use a timber filler such as 90 x 45 if you are using Chemset Ultrafix Plus. The anchors use a nut and bolt configuration, it will be necessary to counter sink the nut so that you can then place the door jamb over the timber filler and use ordinary screws to fix it in place.

I suggest using the following products to firmly anchor your door jamb filler in place if you have hollow bricks in your wall.

Ramset Chemset:

Ramset 300ml Chemset UltraFix Plus
Ramset Multifit Sieve - 4 Pack
Ramset M8 x 110mm Galvanised Anchor Stud - 4 Pack (make sure to double check the length that you need)

Hi @JustinMW

are you sure there is nothing solid (brick) on the external edges of the opening that the door frame could fasten securely to? I don't think it would be completely hollow otherwise the opening would have no structural strength at all other than the aluminium externals and plasterboard. You wouldn't need anything fancy like Chemist to fix the frame to, just masonry fasteners.

I am thinking along the same lines as @EricL in the addition of a timber filling piecem for the gap between the double brick and wall (If I am picturing it right?)

You could screw through the brick into the "spacer" piece of timber. Then when framing the door out you have something solid to attach the frame to.

Do you have a picture of between the brick outer wall, gap and then the internal wall? Or the space that you are refering to?

Hi Nailbag, the house is all brick rendered and whitset plaster finish no plaster board at all. There ate no frames or mouldings anywhere its all just plastered brick. Western Australia located if that helps. Without removing all the whiteset and render back to bare brick I don't know exactly the make up, um just going off what what the wall looks like in the ceiling cavity un rendered and un plastered. It looks like standard 10 hole clay brick to me but I'm not a builder by any means.

Hi Dave, it's a single brick wall where the bricks have been laid on their side so the 10 hole hollows are running horizontal to the wall and it looks like they have filled 30 or 40mm of the end of the brick with mortar then plaster finished over it. Very similar to the picture attached.im just not sure if chemset will hold in the cavity or pull straight out if forced.

If you use the Ramset Multifit Sieve - 4 Pack you should get a positive anchor even if there are hollow channels in the brick. I encourage you to watch the installation video to get a better idea on how the Chemset will anchor itself into hollow bricks.

Thanks for the pic and explanation 🙂 Much easier to picture it in my head now. Must admit I havnt come across those bricks yet 🙂 And by the sound of it @EricL's suggestion with the sieve should work ) I have used the sieves before at work and they worked surprisingly well.

Hi Dave, no worries at allthats the standard internal house brick in Western Australia. There are 12 hole not 10 like my initial message. After looking into it more most people use metal door jambs with ties that are set between the brick mortar then mortar backfilled To fill the spave between the jab and brick wall. A substantially bigger job but makes sense. I'll see how I go with the chem anchors.
