Can you use a water-based primer for an oil enamel topcoat?

I have a pantry that I'm fixing up. Part of the door frame wasn't painted in a gloss like the rest of it. I have sanded the frame (leaving the properly done part). Due to it only being a small area, I'm hoping to save money and not buy a new prep coat. Previous owners have left a tin of frame high gloss enamel. Is it possible to use this Prep 4 in 1 water based paint, that I used for the pantry walls. And then use the oil enamel as the topcoat?

Or will that just not work at all? It doesn't have to be the ultimate solution, just something that can save me money and fix the situation for now I think.

Hi @rebelliouskiwi,

I have spoken with the British Paints technical team who have unfortunately told me these products are incompatible, and they no longer have an oil-based 4 in 1 prep coat you can use.

They have mentioned that Dulux White Prepcoat 1Step Oil Based Primer Sealer And Undercoat would be a suitable prep coat for this project.

Would it be OK to miss out on the primer and undercoat and put the oil enamel straight onto the wooden door frame,since its such a small area, I really wasn't wanting to buy any more paint at the moment.

Hi @rebelliouskiwi,

You can always give it a shot, but the method of application developed by British Paints calls for a primer, so there is no guarantee it will stick and last as intended.

I'd be weighing up the cost to get some primer now versus the cost of primer plus the cost of replacing the paint if it fails in the not-so-distant future.
