How to stop roof dripping onto deck?

Hi Everyone,

I’m dealing with an issue where water from the deck roof drips onto the timber edge of the deck, causing it to rot. I’m trying to figure out the best solution.

Would you recommend installing a gutter like the one in the image below (please suggest materials or methods to build something similar), or would it be better to extend the roof edge by 10-15 cm so the rainwater falls directly onto the lawn? The latter option would save me from having to relocate the floodlights to make room for the gutter.

I’d appreciate your advice. Thanks!

Extending the roof would make it easier, but soon you will have rain drop holes in your lawn. This is an effect where water splashes down onto the ground and creates a hole due to the force of the rainwater. It then creates a puddle, and the water will soon pool in the lowest section of your lawn. The ideal solution is to install a gutter so that all that rainwater will get directed to your storm water drain. I propose using PVC gutters for ease of installation. 

In regards to your flood lights, it can be lowered and relocated by simply adding a piece of timber behind where the gutter will be located. You can also use angle brackets so that it is not in the way of the gutter.
