How to fix chipped section of drywall after spackle removal?

Hi,

I have this section of drywall. Previously I did a poor patch. I have sanded and scraped off excess spackle with a putty knife. I scratched some of the surrounding wall.

my plan is to sand the wall done to get the area smooth, then spackle, then paint. Will this work?

I suggest doing the spackle first, your goal is to put a coat of spackle as low as possible on the surface of the wall. Give the spackle enough time to cure before you begin sanding the wall. My best advice is to use a sanding block in order to get a uniform flat finish. 

Please make sure to wipe off all the sanding dust on the wall with a damp cloth. Once the wall is free of dust you can then begin painting the wall.
