How to paint over asbestos paint under drainage board?

Hi Everyone,

I have a asbestos inspection done for my house and identified the black paint under the drainage board to contain asbestos.

I'm thinking of painting over it to seal it.

What sealant/primer/paint is suitable for the job? How would I go about it?

I've not done much painting at all.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's wonderful to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about asbestos.

The only paint the store carries for asbestos is the Crommelin 15L Asbestos Fibroseal Primer and the Crommelin 15L Grey Asbestos Fibroseal Topcoat. The store does not have it in a smaller quantity. As an alternative, I propose getting a quote from a professional asbestos remover on how much it will cost just to remove your sink. Once you have the sink removed you can then install a new sink without having to worry about asbestos.

For the mean time, maybe I just cover it with plastic and duct tape?

Is it easy to get new kitchen sink installed? If I don't replace the whole bench I would need to have it custom made?

Sorry I haven't done much reno.

I'm not planning on doing major reno but if it's relatively quick and easy (minimal disturbance to daily life) to install a new bench in the current space I might just do that.

Once the sink has been safely removed by a suitably licenced person, we can see if the cutout works with anything.

If the cutout for the kitchen sink is a standard size, then it won't be too difficult to replace, but we would need to know the size of the cutout before we can determine a suitable replacement. Have a look at How to mount a sink for an idea of what is required.

Unfortunately, I can't say I've ever seen a kitchen sink custom-made to fit a cut-out. The cut-out is always made for the kitchen sink, not the other way around.

You'll likely need the assistance of a plumber to attach the tap and waste if things don't line up perfectly.

Replacing the benchtop is also an option. If you map out the shape of your existing benchtop with measurements for all sides and the location of the sink, then head to your local Bunnings' Special Orders desk, they will be able to custom order you a replacement benchtop that will fit a new kitchen sink. I think your best option is to replace the benchtop and install a new sink.

Personally I would be going with having the asbestos professionally removed over some form of temp/permanent fix. To @JacobZ point about benchtop openings for sinks being purpose cut. If you can send through a photo of the top of the bench and sink, we might be able to better advise if a generic sink may just drop in. As older homes typically had a single basin with an above bench drainage area off to one side. A plumber would be best to confirm and it wouldn't be an expensive project. But the asbestos will need to go before a plumber will do any work.

And if you were thinking down the lines of a new benchtop, then I would seriously consider replacing the cabinets with a Kaboodle one. This will give you a lot more bench and cupboard space within the same footprint.

The sink is a single bowl with drainer on either side.

My vote would be for the sink to go 🙂 If you measure the outside of the sink (on top) you will be able to have a rough idea on the size of replacement of the sink (like for like with the bowl in the same place type deal, anything else will probarly require modification the the cabinets. And just saw your measurements 🙂 lol So there is your starting point. Have a look around for a new one (you can also keep an eye out for a second hand one without the asbestos, A lot of people throw them out when doing renos so keep an eye out on social media sites)

I licenced person to remove the abspestos would be the start.

A plumber to install a new sink in the same format (taps mounted on the sink itself.

If you dont touch the asbestos you have some time, sooner then later tho I would do it as a peace of mind.

Kaboodle kitchen cabinets are easy to put together if you do want to consider the whol kitchen replacement. We can come up with ideas for sure about that 🙂

I just went on facebook marketplace and couldn't see anything, apparently my size is a bit of odd one.

Did a quick search on the interwebs, new kithen cabinets looks to be not cheap lol

The house does need quite a bit of modernisation but I just hope I can put it off a couple of years. As I'm not quite sure what to do yet, don't want to spend the money for new cabinets and ends up having to redo it in a few years.

Thanks for the photo and dimensions. It's going to be a struggle to find an exact match for that sink/drain configuration, especially to cover the extra wide width. So, you will need to search for a "double bowl with single drainer" as they come in lengths just over 1300mm. I found this one on Gumtree for $50 with a mixer. Look for both refurbished, seconds as well as 2nd hand as they are all pretty common.

Being that there is some intention to consider replacing the cabinets in the next couple of years, then it might not be any issue with you for maybe requiring some form of makeshift packing under the bench to accomodate the new sink fastening system. Again the plumber will be able to sort that for you.

The only sink I could find that is fairly close is the Clark Single Centre Bowl Benchmark Sink With No Tap Hole. It is 1234mm wide by 471mm deep.

Thanks @Nailbag I'll keep an eye out. If I find a slightly larger one I would need to make the cut out bigger? Would the plumber be able to do that? I don't have the tools let alone skills for it 😂

Thanks @JacobZ , I'm happy to go with a different configuration, anything with drainer on the right would be fine.

This unit is a bit over my budget, althought I should be able to reuse it for the new kitchen.

Since this one has not tap hole, the plumber would need to cut it?

Yes @wintersnow911 any plumber would be able to modify the opening. It’s a pretty common task for them typically using a jigsaw.
