How do I remove basin waste plug from my bathroom sink?

Hello everyone,

I am having some trouble removing the basin waste in my bathroom sink.

I can remove all the plastic pipes under the sink, but after that, when i try twisting / turning the metal hexagonal bit, the whole thing just keeps turning and I am unable to pull/push out the waste / plug. There is also a round plastic piece, around the metal bit under the sink, which also turns with the rest of it.

What should i do?

Hi @zaheerdalal,

Looking at the setup, it would make sense that the threaded metal part of the waste rotates off the PVC collar and can then be pushed upwards.

If you rotate the metal piece anticlockwise while holding the PVC collar in place, does it not unthread and move upwards?

Can you see a nut or anything obviously threaded when you look down into the waste from the top? It looks like there may be a part here that can also rotate, but it is dark and I can't see what is down there.

If this is the case, you may be able to rotate the waste from the top using needle-nosed pliers.

Give these olutions a go and let me know what you find.

I've attached a pic shining light from the top of the sink, but doubt its going to be that helpful. I can not see anything threaded when I look down the waste from the top. There is a screw (you can see the head in the new pic), though i dont know what thats for and if i should unscrew it.

To clarify, is the "PVC collar" you are referring to the round piece of plastic that I marked with a red comment in my pictures? If yes, then I am not really able to hold that PVC collar while turning the metal hexagonal bit. The whole thing just turns. Not sure if I need to find a way to grip the PVC better.

It appears to be a Philips screw head. I suggest getting a Philips screwdriver and seeing if you can unscrew that fixing in your basin waste. I suspect that if you get the screw out the rest of the assembly will come apart.
