How to prepare and paint an uneven wall surface?

Hi. I took down the wallpaper in the bathroom that the previous owners had put up, only to discover that the wall hadn't been prepared properly. After sanding it, this is the condition it's still in. Just wondering how to solve the uneven surface issue before I paint it? I've tried using a multi purpose filler in sections, but the result still isn't great. I'm completely new to this sort of thing so appreciate any advice. Thanks so much!

To tackle the uneven surface on your wall, you have two main options. You can continue sanding the entire wall back until it's completely even and flush. However, this would mean sanding down to the lowest point, which in some areas might expose the wallboard. All the higher spots, including any remaining layers of paint, would need to be removed to achieve a smooth surface.

Alternatively, it may be easier to apply a skim coat of plaster over the entire wall. This involves spreading a thin, even layer of plaster to fill in all the uneven sections, then sanding it back until smooth. Skim coating is often a quicker and more effective method to achieve a professional finish, especially if the wall has multiple problem areas.

As a precaution, if your home is older and the walls include cement sheeting, it’s important to be aware of the possibility of asbestos in the material. Have it checked and tested by a professional before proceeding with any sanding to ensure your safety.
