How to repair mansory wall with plaster render?

first of all, is my wall a cement rendering wall or plastering rendering wall ? My house is double brick.

One of the wall in the walking wardrobe has been deteriorating due to the tenant having been laundry his cloths inside and also the bathroom sharing the same wall.

The corner of wall has already peeled and some mould? And yellowish thing can be seen. When I scraped the paints and the plaster rendering, the powder feel moist. And seems those rendering are not holding very well, and can be scrape down easily by some force.

so how do I approach these, to get the wall repaired

The plaster rendering on your brick wall appears to have significantly deteriorated, which has likely occurred over many years.

To repair the wall, the first step is to assess the extent of the damage. Use a scraper to remove all loose or deteriorated plaster across the affected area. Given the spider web cracking and the poor paint adhesion, it’s likely you’ll need to remove more plaster than initially expected to reach a solid, well-adhered base. Work carefully to avoid damaging the underlying brickwork.

Once the damaged plaster is removed, clean the surface thoroughly to remove dust, debris, and mould. You may need to treat the wall with a mould killer or a diluted bleach solution to ensure no spores remain. Allow the wall to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

To repair the wall, you’ll need to fill the missing areas with new plaster. After the plaster dries, sand it back until it’s smooth and level. Finally, seal the surface with a moisture-resistant primer before repainting to prevent future moisture issues.

This can be a labour-intensive process, and if it feels overwhelming or you’re concerned about achieving a smooth, professional finish, you might consider hiring a plasterer to handle the repair. Additionally, addressing the source of moisture, such as improving ventilation in the wardrobe and bathroom, will help prevent the problem from recurring.

What about this kind the damage, I have include the picture1 to help to clarify. I find these cracks in the bedroom usually happens between the wall and the ceiling, I have removed some of the plasters and see the cements, but I am afraid if I would remove too much? Or should I just continued to scrape them further more?

In addition, the picture2 is the peeling in the bathroom.

And what are the approachs for them respectively as the DIYer . Thanks

In regards to the other damaged sections, the same repair procedure applies. Make sure to remove all the loose cracked sections of the plaster as patching loose damaged sections is not a good idea as they will eventually fail. It's best to replace them with new plaster so that there will no chance of it cracking further and falling off.

Hi Mitchell,

I have a builder coming over to do the assessment, and he gave me the roughly extent of affected wall needed to be treated. In term of re-plastering, how do I plaster from the existing plaster walls, I hope I can explain better.

If your builder has indicated a large area to be plastered, I propose engaging the services of a professional plasterer to fix the damage. For small cracks and chipped areas, it is still possible to do it with a small bucket of plaster, but if the repair is very large it's best to get a trades person so that it will be done quickly and professionally.

Giving that that is about 1M *1M area need to re-plaster , after removing all the loosing plaster, what preparation to the wall before plastering? Someone said need to put a masonry base coat/primer ?

Hi @helloeatty,

The main thing is to ensure as much dust and loose material is removed. As long as the wall has been tidied up and all the loose material is removed, the Hardwall Plaster that @MitchellMc has linked to will act as your base coat. Just lightly dampen the wall before applying to help with adhesion.

You can then apply a skim coat over the hard wall plaster to achieve a smooth surface before painting.
