Is it better to paint skirting boards before or after nailing them to the wall?

Hi,

We are about to get a new floating floor, and as part of that project, we plan to replace all existing skirting boards.

I have two questions:

Is it better to paint them before or after nailing them to the wall?
Do we need to nail them or can we also just glue them or should we do both? What nails should we use, and is there anything else we should consider?

Here's a photo of the last time I did it - a couple of saw horses make things much easier.

Did you just touch up the nail holes, or did you simply glue the skirting boards to the wall?

If you nailed them, what nails did you use? Could I also use screws?

Hi @StefanAUS,

I agree with Jason that painting skirting boards before installing them can save a lot of work, as it’s much easier to get a clean finish without worrying about paint getting on the walls or floor. Once installed, you’ll just need to fill the nail holes and do some minor touch-ups.

For fixing, I recommend both gluing and nailing the skirting boards. A strong construction adhesive will help hold them in place, while 50mm timber nails provide additional security. Nails are preferable over screws because they leave smaller holes that are easier to fill and touch up. Screws require more filling and sanding to get a seamless finish, so they’re usually only needed if the wall is uneven or if extra holding strength is required.

The only situation where I’d consider painting after installation is if you need to use screws, as the extra filling and sanding can be easier to blend in with a final coat of paint once everything is in place.
