How to stop Caroma toilet running?

Hi,

I am having an issue with an older Caroma toilet (circa 2008). After pressing the flush button, sometimes (not always) the water continues to flow into bowl. 

 

When this happens, lightly pressing/tapping on the flush buttons stops the water flow and can hear a 'thud' sound which I suspect is the 'inner buttons' (apologies, I don't know the technical name for the blue things in photo below) coming back up from being stuck. 

Has this happened to anyone before? Any advice?

It sounds like you're dealing with an issue where the flush valve isn't sealing properly, leading to water continuously flowing into the bowl. Based on your description, it seems like there are two possible causes for this issue.

The first and most likely cause is that the flush valve washer has deteriorated over time and is no longer creating a proper seal when it’s supposed to close. This could be why tapping the flush button temporarily fixes the issue—you're probably realigning the washer just enough to stop the water flow. The solution here would be to remove the flush mechanism and replace the flush valve washer. Take the old washer with you to your local Bunnings to ensure you get the correct replacement.

The second possibility is that there’s an issue with the flush mechanism itself, such as a part being broken or misaligned. If the flush valve isn’t dropping back into position properly, it may not be sealing off the water. In this case, you might need to troubleshoot by examining the entire flush mechanism for any broken or jammed components. If you’re not able to identify any issues, you may need to replace the entire mechanism.

Start by replacing the flush valve washer first, as this is the most common cause. If that doesn’t resolve the issue, you may need to look into replacing the whole flush mechanism.
