How to build an elevated cubby?

hi all- newish DIYers here. we’re looking to build an elevated cubby on top of this old wood storage area. There is a concrete slab and 6 metal poles concreted in. I’m wondering what type and size timber we should be using for the frame of the cubby and to further support the existing frame?

An elevated cubby comes with some inherent risks, especially given that children will be using it. Ideally, it should be designed from the ground up to ensure stability and safety. Converting an existing structure that was never intended to bear additional weight can be tricky, and without seeing detailed plans or an assessment of the current framework and its footings, it’s difficult to give specific advice.

A safer approach would be to install separate support posts that are properly anchored and designed to carry the full weight of the cubby. Before proceeding, I’d recommend checking with your local council to see if there are any regulations or requirements you need to follow. Since cubby houses don’t fall under standard building codes, there aren’t many formal resources for construction guidance, and you might need to enlist the services of a carpenter, builder or engineer to put plans together for you.
