What coating for polished timber dining table?

Hi. I have a dining table with wood polish on its top. I wish to cover it with something that will allow me to wipe it. It has matt finish and I am afraid water may damage the polish. What material can I use? Also, how do you use the material with a brush or spray it? I wish to develop a thin PU film on the table that allows me to see the wood grain and does not damage the polish. Thanks

I'm not aware of any products specifically designed to be sprayed over a polished wood surface to create a protective film without affecting the finish. Most polyurethane or protective coatings require proper adhesion, which usually means lightly sanding the surface first—something that could damage the existing polish.

It might not be the ideal solution, but have you considered using a clear vinyl tablecloth? This would allow you to see the wood grain while providing a wipeable surface without altering the original finish. You can find clear vinyl in different thicknesses, and a heavier gauge will sit more securely on the table without shifting.

Thanks for your response. I am willing to lightly sand the table top and apply a PU coating. The table is used regularly, so a PU coating will help preserve the polish for a long time.

To apply a polyurethane coating like the Cabot's Satin Water-Based Cabothane Clear Polyurethane, it's important to remove the existing polish, as it can act as a contaminant that prevents the polyurethane from adhering properly. You would need to lightly sand the table to remove the polish and ensure a clean surface for the new coating.

After sanding, make sure to clean the surface thoroughly before applying the polyurethane. You can apply the polyurethane with a brush or a foam applicator, depending on the finish you prefer. Be sure to follow the product’s instructions and apply thin, even coats, allowing each coat to dry completely before applying the next.
