How to sand plaster without tearing jointing tape?

I am patching a drywall with Selleys plaster and UNi-PRO 48mm x 20m Plasterboard Jointing Tape - 20m. I have apply some plaster onto the surroundings of the hole. How can I sand it the plaster smooth without tearing off the Jointing tape because I am not confident with the adhesiveness of the tapes.

Hi @Hayaimi,

To get a smooth, flush finish, you'll first want to make sure the patched area is completely filled so there are no low spots compared to the surrounding wall. I'd suggest filling the internal area so it's level with the surface, then extending the plaster outwards into the red-marked area. Once it’s dry, start sanding with 120-grit sandpaper to smooth out the surface. After that, switch to 180-grit to remove any sanding marks left by the coarser grit. This should give you a clean, seamless result without damaging the tape.

Do I need to just fill it once all the way to the red-marked area or do I just level the hole, let it dry, sand it, then extend it to the red-marked area and repeat the steps above?

What are the precautions to not make a bulge on the wall?

Also, for the filler extending to the red-marked area, can I use UNi-PRO SMOOTH COAT?

Hi @Hayaimi,

You could do it in two steps. Fill the inside area and wait for it to dry. Sand the area to remove any material proud of the surface. Then, do a thin skim coat over the entire area and out to the red mark. Lightly sand to finish.

To not make a bulge on the wall, it's important to sand back and remove any excess material from your patch that is proud of the wall. We want the finished level to be the same as the surrounding wall.

Yes, you can use that product for all the filling.
