How to remove tap cover to replace washer?

Hi,

I am wanting to replace a washer on a Laundry Tap however cannot see how to remove the cover which sits flush on the Tile (see attached image). I can pull the cover away from the tile towards me about 5mm as it has a spring on the inside of it but not remove it. Turning it does nothing as there is no thread on in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your tap cover.

It's possible that the white washer that is connected to the spindle is a stopper of sorts that prevents the cover flange from being taken off. I propose trying to take that white washer off and this might allow you to slide the cover flange off the spindle body. Another possibility is that there might be rubber washer inside that is holding the flange in place, I propose spraying it with WD40 to lubricate it and see if the cover flange will pull out.

@EricL is correct in that the white washer is press-fitted on. Behind it is that spring thats keeping the pressure on the cover plate flat to the tiles. Try using pointed-nose pliers to remove the washer, or levering it out with a flat blade screwdriver on either side.

Alternatively try levering it from the back of the cover plate?

My answer is the same as @EricL 's and @Nailbag's 🙂 I would use a flat head screwdriver and lever the white bit off. It will be tight fitting but not tight as in wont budge. I always worry about how much force to apply so I just take my time and slowly work away at it. If you have enough space then a screwdriver either side to lever the white stopper out easier.

Hi All,

Firstly, apologies for delay in response. Your help has been invaluable, I was able to remove the white washer on the spindle with pointed nose pliers and then remove the cover plate against the tiles.

Was looking to replace it with something like https://www.bunnings.com.au/estilo-chrome-wall-top-assembly-set_p5003020 . Can I please ask the following :

1. Are the thread sizes a universal fit allowing me to use these ?

2. Should I use plumbing tap on the thread ?

3. Is it worth investing in Brass tap valves such as https://www.bunnings.com.au/hydroseal-12mm-tap-valves-with-o-ring-10-pack_p4923226

It's good to hear that you've managed to remove the cover flange of your wall taps. In regards to the Estilo Chrome Wall Top Assembly Set the thread fittings are Australian standard. The only reason it won't fit is if the tap fitting behind your wall is too old, but from my observation it appears to be a modern set. There is no need to use plumbing tape when attaching the spindle sets as the tolerance for the spindle threads are quite high. The proper seal to use is the default one that comes with the set and that is the red felt O ring sealer.

The Estilo wall top set comes with a default white jumper valve, but there is absolutely no reason you can't use the HydroSeal 12mm Tap Valves With O-Ring which has outstanding sealing qualities. If your budget allows it upgrading to the HydroSeal is an excellent investment.

I actually used those taps as replacements for my shower area. My only regret is that I didnt buy the whole set (bathtub sout, taps plus shower) :)They are the style I like and functional 🙂

Definitely go with those HydroSeal 12mm Tap Valves With O-Ring @EricL mentioned. A plumber an often works with put me on to them and worth every penny. They solve several other issues to like hammering, and require less force to shut the water off for those with weak or arthritic hands.
