How to rejuvenate old kitchen cabinetry?

Hi there,

My home has incredibly old and poorly maintained kitchen cabinetry. I want to give life back to it and am looking for some advice.

As you can see, the wood has many blemishes and appears to be unfinished. I am wanting to paint it - what are the steps to complete this? I understand I will likely have to remove them from the wall to do this.

Secondly, the inside of the cabinetry has a peeling and gross material. Is this something I can remove and replace?

Thank you for your question about updating your old kitchen cabinets.

The doors and the frame of the cabinets are made of solid timber, and they can be restored by sanding and painting them. Use medium grit sandpaper such as this Flexovit 115mm x 1m 120 Grit Timber Sandpaper Roll to remove any remaining coating and blemishes and prepare the timber for painting. You can then use the Dulux Renovations Range cabinet paints in a colour of your choosing to update the cabinets. Check out Rejuvenate your cabinets with Dulux paint to see them in action.

For the shelving, as they are chipboard, they aren't quite as easy to restore. You could remove the vinyl coating with a scraper and then applying some new adhesive film. Alternatively, you could remove the shelves altogether and replace them with CUSTOMpine White Matt Carcass Particleboard.
