How to replace rusted part of gutter?

I have the elbow joint part of the gutter (see attached pics) which needs replacement as it’s fully rusted. Can someone advise the next course of action. The dimensions of the pipe is 100 *75. I have found this pipe in Bunnings which will do the job however I can’t see any elbow joint pipe. The dimensions of elbow are marked in the pic too.

Any help and options on how to progress from here will be appreciated. Cheers

Hi @vg_39,

Unfortunately, there doesn't appear to be an elbow available for the 100x75mm zincalume downpipes.

Traditionally, steel downpipes are cut and bent on site. You can see in your first image that the bend has been sealed with silicone, which indicates this is what was done originally.

If you have a look on Youtube, you'll find videos showing the process if you search for "Cutting and bending rectangular steel downpipes".

If you'd like to give this a try, it will require left cut snips, right cut snips, a drill, a rivet gun and some clear roof and gutter silicone.

Are you aware if Bunnings or any other roofing/gutter companies cut it based on my measurements.

If Bunnings or a gutter specialist company builds this for me I am quite sure I can install

Hello @vg_39

I'm sorry but the galvanized down pipes come in fixed lengths and can't be ordered in custom sizes. If you feel that the process is too demanding, I suggest engaging the services of a handy person who has experience in fixing galvanized down pipes. You can post the job on Airtasker or Hipages, make sure to get a minimum of two quotes for the job.

One other way to replace your downpipe is to use 90mm PVC pipes and elbows.

Thanks @EricL as per your advise, I got someone to come over and replace the gutter pipe.

However the repair guy found rusted parts as attached which I couldn’t get him to fix.

@EricL - can you please advise my options here. There are no holes but it’s rusted as displayed in the pic below

Hi @vg_39,

You'll want to treat the rust with a rust converter such as this White Knight 0.125L Rust Guard Rust Converter.

As you will be working at heights, you will need a ladder and a helper to foot the ladder. If you are not confident working at heights, consider having a handy person carry out the work for you.

Start by cleaning the affected area to remove any dirt, dust or flaking rust. Make sure you wear a mask and gloves so you can clean the rusted areas with a wire brush. You want to remove any dirt, dust or flaking rust that would affect the adhesion of paint.

You should then wipe down the rusted area with White Knight Rust Guard Solvent Cleaner.

Once clean, paint on the White Knight 0.125L Rust Guard Rust Converter, following the instructions on the label closely. The reaction will chemically alter the rust, preventing further corrosion.

You can then use White Knight Rust Guard Grey SLS Etch Primer Spray Paint over the converter with White Knight Cold Gal Paint.

This will give your gutters the best protection possible without replacing them.
