Can I use timber with holes for garden bed project?

Hi Bunnings Community, I wanted to ask advice about a raised garden bed project I have. This is one of the sides of the wall I was working on to be the interior but I forgot I screwed holes into it from a previous attempt at fastening it.

Is it okay for it to be on the interior side? Say I absolutely had to use this side, what could I do to prevent damage to the sleeper from soil or water?

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

Timber is already porous, and in direct contact with soil, small holes like this will not be overtly more risky than natural imperfections like the knots above and below these holes.

I would just leave the holes as they are. H4 timber is treated inside and out, so it should be fine.

I am i correct in understanding that the above should be okay without the plastic? And that the holes are not anymore risky than natural imperfections, as you said?

If I do go ahead and cover them up, would a small patch of builders plastic or something similar be okay?

Hi @rben,

Apologies, upon review I realised you were using H4 pine sleepers, which are perfectly fine without any additional protection.

Their treatment permeates the entire sleeper, meaning the inside of the sleeper is treated in the same way as the outside, so they can get wet without any issues.

Put simply, I wouldn't worry about it. They'll be fine with some holes in them.
