How to fix cracked reticulation piping?

This is probably a straightforward question, so apologies but I'm new to reticulation so I'm not sure where to start.

It looks like someone has driven over a part of the reticulation and as a result there is a crack (pictured). I can see a Ratchet Clamp holding two of the pipes together but I'm not sure what the part that's actually broken is called and therefore how to replace it. The bit that is cracked seems to be attached to a circular black disc beneath it, but again I'm also not sure what that is and if that also needs to be replaced.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your damaged reticulation piping.

I'm going to have to ask you to dig further into the soil in order to reveal what the entire part looks like. It appears to be a standard 90-degree elbow that is on some sort of standing plate that prevents it from moving. It could also be a plug end with a footing. Either way we'll need to see the entire structure in order to tell what it is. Once you have it out of the ground, please take a photo and post it here. We can then do a search for the part that's been damaged.

Hi Eric, thanks for the reply and for the warm welcome. I’ve taken some more photos-it seems like the black pipe just plugs into the white pipe. The connection seems quite snug and I can’t see any fasteners so it may be glued in?

Hi @cyberbash,

The damaged black plastic part appears to be an irrigation riser with an elbow joining it to your poly irrigation line.

The piece underground is a PVC pressure elbow which will be glued in place.

Unfortunately, you are going to have to cut it off and replace it with a new one as the irrigation riser is glued into it.

If you can advise what the diameter of the poly pipe and the PVC pipe are, I am happy to recommend a suitable replacement.

Hi Jacob,

the black poly pipe is 2cm diameter and the white PVC pipe is 4cm diameter. If you could give me detailed instructions/post a link for how to replace it too that would be much appreciated-I’m not very handy but want to learn.

Hi @cyberbash,

It looks like they've used a K-Rain 19mm Barbed Elbow × 15mm BSP Female at the top of the riser. This would mean the riser is threaded into the underside of this fitting. If you rotate the riser anticlockwise, does it move at all?

If you can rotate this piece out, you may be able to do the same at the base of the riser meaning you could just replace the riser.

If this is not possible, I'll still need a bit more information to be confident with the materials.

Can you advise the diameter of the PVC pipe at the base of the trench?

Fingers crossed you can just rotate the riser out of place, but if not I should be able to get you the parts you need with this further information.

Hi Jacobz,

two steps forward one step back. The riser is unscrew able-I’ve managed to remove it from the bottom (left it attached for now to avoid dirt getting inside the pipe)-but the top has snapped off inside the elbow. At least I won’t have to mess around under the ground!

What do you suggest? Replace the elbow and riser?

Hi @cyberbash,

I'm glad to hear the riser came out at the bottom without too many issues as that is the more difficult end to replace. Replacing the riser and the elbow will be relatively easy from here.

You'll want to grab a riser in the same diameter and length as the old one. I'm guesstimating from your images, but it looks like this Garden Rain 150 x 20mm Poly Rural Irrigation Riser is the way to go. If it is slightly longer or shorter, there are also options that are 80mm and 300mm long.

To the top of the riser, you'll attach a GD Watermark 3/4" Poly Irrigation F/F Elbow and then to the elbow, assuming the irrigation line is 19mm, attach a Toro 19mm Tail x 20mm BSP Male Director. You can then use a Toro 19mm Poly Ratchet Clamp to attach the irrigation line over the barbed connector. If the irrigation line is not 19mm in diameter, please let me know so I can work out a solution for this connection.
