How to fill hole in brick wall between two flats?

Hi I was wondering if someone could help please. I’ve moved into this flat and on removing the heater from the wall discovered a big hole between my flat and the flat next door that’s filled with some messy cabling and I can see right to the back of my neighbours heater I’m wondering if anyone knows what’s going on here and if you have any idea what we would need to do. once the cabling/electrics have been sorted out, how could we divide things up in there and also make things a bit more soundproof because currently we can each hear each other’s conversations I’m assuming because of this big gap in the wall. Hi @maro,

Once you've had an electrician sort out the cables you could use bricks to add a central divider in the space. You'll need to mortar them together. They'll provide a certain amount of noise reduction between the two flats.

Alternatively, if you weren't confident in bricking up the space, you could cut some Bastion 1200 x 600 x 30mm XPS Multi Use Foam Board and jamb it in the gap as a divider. Any gaps around its perimeter can be sealed with expanding foam.

I don't think you will find it easy to brick that up as there doesn't seem to be much for the bricks to stand on. The wiring is the power feed to your (and next door's) heater and you need to make sure you only sort the one that feeds your heater. An electrician could be able to turn this into a power point on the wall for you. I would frame the hole with timber and fill your side with acoustic material or at least insulation of some kind. If you are concerned about noise, you could set the timber framing back enough to double sheet the hole with plasterboard instead of just a single piece then flush everything in (there are plenty of how tos here for that). Just one precaution, as the insulation will be behind next door's heater, make sure it is non combustible, I don't think expanding foam would be the best here.

Just an update on this. What we ended up doing is fill half the hole with sound proofing and soundproof insulation and used fires too filler around the gaps, then the half on my side of the wall with bricks, mortared together, the plasterer cut à gap in the bottom of the brick for the cables. Then he rendered over that, and just waiting for it to be white plastered on top. It’s very sound proofing and more. I just hope it doesn’t collapse.
