How to remove weeds and revive lawn?

I am ashamed to show you my garden as it is now 🫣! With a newborn at home I’ve let the weeds take control and not sure what to do now.

The green in the grass on the photos, that is all the weeds (I think it’s mainly crowsfoot?). The brown is the actual grass, which I need to water more often clearly.

Given we are now coming into autumn in Melbourne, not sure what the best steps are to help restore my beloved but forgotten garden??

I’ve also included a photo of the seeds I used to establish/grow the garden in the first place (about 2 years ago).

Hay a new baby always takes centre stage so no problems .

But Baby is soon wanting to get out onto lovely green grass so let's talk grass.

Firstly, I don't think more seed will help the trick is to restore what's out there and any underlying problems the bare patches will close over.

For starters consider buying some lawn food and see if that perks up your area.

Lawn food with soil improver is a two in one grass and soil booster try this or any similar products.

With regular evening watering not to much should have that lawn coming good in no time grass will slow its growth so expect this)

There might be some underling pests at work but lets start with the basics.

No need to be ashamed, life with a newborn is full-on! Your garden will bounce back with a bit of care. Since we’re heading into autumn in Melbourne, it’s a good time to start reclaiming your lawn before winter dormancy slows growth.

For the weeds, especially crabgrass, you can use Amgrow 2L Bin-Die Hose On Selective Herbicide, which is safe for buffalo grass and will target broadleaf weeds. If you need a stronger option, Yates 4L BuffaloPro Hose On Lawn Weed Killer can help but always check for buffalo-safe labels. Hand-pulling crowsfoot before it seeds is ideal, but if that’s too much right now, spraying will stop it from spreading further.

Once the weeds are under control, boost your lawn with Scotts Lawn Builder 8kg Buffalo Slow Release Lawn Fertiliser and Seasol Lawn & Turf Starter to help it recover. Since your grass looks dry, deep watering twice a week will encourage healthier roots.

If you’re overwhelmed, just take it step by step—tackle the weeds first, then feed and water. Your lawn will thank you, and by spring, it should be looking lush again!
