How to remove window safety restrictor?

There is a window safety restrictor install in all the upper floor windows in my home. Since I don’t have kids living in the house, I want to remove them for a better ventilation.

May I know what’s the right tools to remove it? I’m not familiar with this but it doesn’t look like a normal screw.

Hi @rickychan,

Depending on your location and whether this is a strata-managed building, there could be legislation in place that requires these locks to be in place. Currently, requirements for window safety devices in NSW apply to high-risk windows only for apartments covered by strata schemes and homes built since 1 May 2013 (bedrooms only).

It appears that your device is fixed in position and not easily removable. Before you attempt removal, I would strongly encourage you to contact your local council for further information. Please also remember that these devices are not just for children residing in the home but also for those occasions when children might visit your home. Tragically, there have been many incidents of children falling from windows. When this happens, children often suffer serious injuries or die.

I am living in a freestanding private house, it isn't governed by strata scheme. I understood the risk of having children visit us occasionally. Is there a way that I can remove it temporarily to clean the window and flyscreen and install it back afterwards?

As there is no universal fitting, it's hard to determine how the one on your window would be removed @rickychan. There's a possibility that the pop rivet needs to be drilled out to release it. To re-install, you'd need to use a pop-rivet and gun.
