How to update shower?

Any thoughts on whether an update to this “shower” would be relatively straight forward?

For context, the previous owners built the shower (?late 80s) installing sauna type wood within the shower itself (seen painted white)…

Would it be feasible to simply update the shower glass and waterproof / tile up around the wet area inside the shower and replace the hardware?

Any rough ideas on costs for materials and trades would be deeply appreciated too.

Now thats an interesting shower, I dont mind the look even 🙂

Replacing the glass frame can be done but will probarly be a custom fit job.

Tiling over that timber would not be wise. The back side of the tiles should be something like James Hardie 2.88m² Villaboard Lining - 2400 x 1200 x 6mm and waterproofed before adding tiles. However you have the a option of placing a bathroom wall panel over the timber Wall Art 2400 x 1200 x 3mm New York White Tile Wet Area Wall / Shower Panel These are something I have considered for my bathroom as well.

If you go the route of the wall panels then note that you will be adding thickness to the distance that tapwork, handles spigots will need. Also I am not sure at how the waterproofing of that timber has been done so its a grey area.

A fairly cost effective way to freshen it up could be:

1. For the floor. Remove all the silicone, and grout to the first row of dark tiles. Only remove the grout to half depth so not to breech the waterproofing membrane. Then use one of the several tile paints (some have different colours. Then re-grout with the colour of choice. If you want to replace the tiles, then you will need a certified person who can apply an epoxy grout and full clear coating over the new tiles to provide the new waterproof protection.

2. Replace the grout on the walls if you feel they need refreshing. If so, do all the silicone jobs last.

3. Shop around for a new hinged door to replace the old slider. I have had to replace a few over the years and finally got on to a guy that does awesome quality ones for half the price of most others. The screen guy could also redo all your siliconing too.

4. Tap fittings will be easy. The threads are standard, so this taps can come off and new ones fitted.

5. Shower rose is another easy one. So many styles to choose from, my favourite are rain heads which come in different arm lengths. You can also fit a rose that has a secondary hand-held rose.

6. Install or replace the old soap/shampoos shelf

Thanks for sharing your question about updating your shower. I believe @Dave-1 and @Nailbag have pretty much covered all the important topics in regards to renovating your shower. My best advice is to get at least three quotes if you are planning on having your shower door assembly replaced. In this manner you'll get an idea of the prevailing cost in your area.
