How to lower old stove slab for floating floor installation?

We have just removed our old kitchen. There is a concrete slab under the old stove that sits 12mm higher than the rest of the wooden floor. The slab will sit 200mm past the cupboard plinth. This is a problem as we intend to install floating floor.

we think we need to deal with this problem before we install the cupboards.

Hi @Maursby57,

You're correct that it's an issue best dealt with before installing cabinetry. In fact, I would wait until after installing the flooring to install the cabinetry.

For the 12mm height difference on the rest of the floor, I would suggest using STRUCTApanel 2400 x 1200 x 12mm Structural Panelling H2 Particleboard to raise it. That will correct the difference in your floor, and you'll be able to install the floating flooring over the now-level surface.

The particleboard flooring can be glued and screwed or just screwed down to the existing flooring.

Thanks Mitchell,

The problem is the floating floor will be continuous from the kitchen through the lounge. The whole floor is wooden floorboards apart from the slab in the kitchen.

We don’t wish to install the flooring before the cupboards as it will make repairing any flooring damage in the future difficult.

We are thinking the easiest solution might be to grind the part of the slab not covered by the cupboards.

Hi there,

we hired a concrete grinder and levelled the slab. This has helped solve the problem. However the rest of the floor is uneven and we have had to level up the plinth bases before putting the cupboards in place.

It is a partially self-smoothing latex leveller with excellent properties of adhesion, flexibility and water resistance. Ideal for use prior to the installation of ceramic tiles, carpet and vinyl floor coverings.
