How to fix security door lock stopping door from closing?

I have recently replaced the barrel lock into our Lockwood security door. The cam is in the right position however the centre locking hook will not go back in the lock housing as it stays out and does not allow the door to close. The door can be closed by using the handle but when opened the hook extends all the way.

It looks like you have a Lockwood 8654 Hinged Security Door Lock.

Looking at the Installation Manual, I suspect the issue is related to Step 2, where the lock body is inserted into the door in the factory set deadlock position.

I'd suggest you remove the lock body itself and follow the above guide for installation, ensuring the lock body is set in the deadlock position when it is inserted.

Assuming you follow the instructions closely, the lock should operate as intended.

If you follow these steps and the lock still doesn't operate as intended, then there may be an issue with the lock itself, which would require replacement.

Thanks Jacob. I have reinstalled the lock into the door frame according to the instructions sent. The centre lock hook remains out and will not retract using the instructions. I can close the door using the handle but when I let go of the handle the hook comes out. albybruce

Can you please confirm that the key does not retract the hook? The hook is used to lock the door, which should be done through the key.

I am having the same problem with this lock Lockwood 8654 Hinged Security Door Lock as albybruce.
The key does not retract the hook.
The key still works to deadlock the door and unlock it. The nib works to lock the door from the inside. Only the hook will not stay retracted when the handle is released.

I suspect that it has something to do with steps 6,7 and 8 in the instruction's manual. In step six the instructions mention a "passage mode" which I suspect allows the hook to retract inside. I propose testing steps 6,7 and 8 to see if the hook can be retracted into the unlock position. Please allow us to contact Lockwood to get more information about the position of the hook. As soon as we get more information about the lock, we'll get back to you.

I have tried steps 6,7 & 8 and while the hook will retract when the handle is turned, it fails to remain retracted.
The hook should remain retracted until the release button above it is pressed. Otherwise the lock is working with the key as it should.

I’ve spoken with Lockwood technical support regarding your Lockwood 8654 Hinged Security Door Lock. They stated that for this model, the hook remains extended under normal operation, and the handle must be depressed when closing the door. This differs from models that have a tab instead of a hook. In those locks, the tab self-retracts over the striker plate and returns under spring action. In your lock, the hook is what holds the door closed. Without it, the door could simply be pushed open. There is no mechanism for the hook to self-retract or self-deploy after the door is closed.

If you prefer a lock where you don’t need to press the handle when closing, you might consider swapping to something like the Rolltrak Black Keyed Hinged Screen Door Lock, which has a self-retracting mechanism. Of course, if you feel the lock is faulty, our team in-store would be happy to swap it over for you.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I don’t think that is correct about the handle having to be turned to retract the hook and close the door. This is a new problem for this door which we have had for a while. We have 2 other screen doors with the same handles and the hook does remain retracted after opening the door.
Perhaps I am looking at the wrong model, but it was the only one on the Lockwood site that resembles our handle.

It's possible that you are after a different model from what you currently have. If you prefer to exchange the model you have for another one such as the Rolltrak Black Keyed Hinged Screen Door Lock as suggested by Mitchell, please make sure to bring your docket and all the packing material of the door lock back to the store you purchased it from. I recommend speaking to the team at the customer service counter and showing them your docket so that they can assist you.
