How to fix gap between Colorbond fence & concrete?

My section is higher than the neighbours and I have garden beds on our shared fence line. My land and therefore, my garden is higher than the bottom of the fenceline. previous owners of our house made the garden sloped towards fence, however, it loses a lot of space that could be used. Is there anything I can put there so soil doesn't go through the gap onto the neighbours side? Obviously sleepers is an option, but wondering if there's a cleaner way, to prevent leaves piling up between sleepers and fence or creepy crawlies? (Assuming sleeper goes into soil, rather than sit on concrete? If sleeper does go on concrete, I can reduce that gap, however, I'd then need to use sealant to make sure soil can't get between sleepers and concrete. I don't want raised beds, which I know would be an option too. Many thanks.

Thanks for sharing your question about the gap in your fence. Aside from using sleepers such as the 200 x 50mm Sleeper H4 Treated Pine Sienna MicroPro 2.4m, there is also the option of using Icon Plastics 150mm x 10m Slate Grey Garden Edge. I propose visiting your local store and having a look at the garden edging choices, they come in a few different colours and are also available in timber. This would make for an ideal barrier for your garden and will provide a measure of defence against creepy crawlies. However, you'll still need to manually clean the leaves out of the gap between the garden edging and the fence.

Thank you, @EricL for your reply. How would the plastic edging stay there? Do I need to use liquid nails to attach it to the side of the concrete, so it doesn't slip into the soil?

I like the sound of the edging, it's looks the cheapest option and looks takes up less space in the garden bed, which is a bonus & 10m lengths, would mean I should have any joins, unlike sleeper option.

Is it long lasting?

Hi @rebelliouskiwi,

Yes, that edging is long-lasting as it UV stabilised. Another option you might consider is simply installing a length of treated pine baton. It's a solid piece of 45 x 20mm timber that should cover the gap and prevent soil from escaping. It can be glued with landscape adhesive or secured in place with fixings to the concrete edge.

I was wondering if the Icon Plastic option can be adhered to the concrete using the landscape liquid nails too? Or some sort of sealant to run along the bottom of the edging, which would sit against the concrete ? It works out cheaper to allow a bit of height to the back of my garden as well, where as the timber gets expensive if I go wider than the 50mm.

I have measured the length and I need 17 metres in total, but would like the width 100mm, but can get it down to 75mm for one of the Icon Plastic garden edges to save money

Hi @rebelliouskiwi,

Adhesive won't like to adhere to the plastic. Liquid Nails Landscape could work, but you would have to scratch up the plastic with 40-grit sandpaper to key the surface. You would be better off with Sikaflex 11FC though it's adding some cost.

Have you considered using treated Pine plinths for the edging? They are quite budget-friendly and would cost less than the plastic edging.
